PNR – Passenger Name Record 10 digit unique reservation number

July 10, 2019 - Reading time: 6 minutes

PNR – Passenger Name Record 10 digit unique reservation number.

PNR connotes “passenger name record”. it is a 10 digit number stored in the computer reservation system (CRS) database that has the data of a group of passengers or a passenger that is easily identified using a record locator.

What is PNR

PNR connotes “passenger name record”. it is a 10 digit number stored in the computer reservation system (CRS) database that has the data of a group of passengers or a passenger that is easily identified using a record locator.

PNR was first introduced to exchange reserve information about passengers that require multiple airlines flights to get to their destination. This can now be used for car rental, airport transfer, hotel bookings and for train trips. The PNR is created by a travel agent to store the necessary information on the computer reservation system (CRS). This includes:

  1. The name of the passenger
  2. Itinerary
  3. Contact details of passengers
  4. Ticket number or ticket time limit
  5. Name of travel agent

These details are retained in the booking history and once the booking is completed, the computer reservation system (CRS) issues a unique alpha numeric or alpha code that remains the same even when further changes are made because the computer reservation system (CRS) retains the PNR stored on the archival storage indefinitely. The database gets updated if there is any cancellation or when the trip is completed.

If the reservation is not confirmed, passengers may visit the IRCTC site or visit the official Indian Railway website to check by providing the 10 digit PNR number and the result will be given instantly. For instance, if your waiting number is 100 and you checked your PNR status after 10 days, you will discover that the waiting number has decreased to 30 or 10 depending on passenger availability. The real seat number on your Indian Railway reservation displays four hours of departure time and if it is not confirmed, you may get the reservation cancelled.

How to find the PNR number on the ticket?

In the system of Indian Railway Reservation, the PNR 10 digit number shows on the top left corner of the ticket that is obtain from the railway booking station i.e an i-ticket and the 10 digit numbers shows on the upper right corner of the ticket obtain on-line i.e the e-ticket.

How to check for PNR status?

To check for the PNR status, you no longer need to travel to get the PNR status from the railway station because you can easily check the PNR status through SMS, Website, Android App and mobile phone.

  1. THROUGH SMS: To check ticket reservation status through SMS, all you need to do is to type the PNR 10 digit number and send it to any either of 5888, 139, 5676747 and 57886 through your mobile number.
  2. THROUGH CALL: Just dial 139, speak with the operator and follow the given instructions keenly.
  3. THROUGH THE USE OF WEBSITE: This involves submitting a request online using a PC that has an Internet connection either through the official Indian Railways Website http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html and
  4. or any other status checking website. The online checking for PNR status may also be done using the mobile application.

It should be noted that: To check for the PNR status is of the format “1234567890” that is your “unique” PNR code to the earlier mentioned numbers.

When you get WL after sending the code means you are on the waiting list and could get a chance to be confirmed if there is any cancellation from other passengers but when the reply is REGRET, it means that there are no more available booking.

Indian Railway really cares for the convenience of the passengers by providing reservation tool for PNR status checking. Passengers are now able to confirm their PNR status using PNR 10 digit number online.
